Abstract
Up to date, numerous and continuous studies on thyroid disease have been accumulated but the
problem of correct diagnosis and treatment is yet controversial in some case.
Goiter, although frequently cured with relative ease with medical or surgical treatment, still remains
as one of the unsolved problem of medicine today.
Of all the most important problem of the thyroid, disease is against recurrence. Recently the
treatment of the thyroid cancer with its prognosis and the relationship between the benign thyroid
tumor and the thyroid is established with the thyroid cancer.
We made clinical and statistical studies about 271 cases of thyroid diseases diagnosed or operated
upon during the period of past 8 years and 8 months from Jan. 1961 through Aug. 1969 in the
department of general surgery, Woo Sok University.
The incidence of the thyroid surgical disease was approximately 26.5% of 271 thyroid cases during
8 years and 8 months, and the thyroid disease most commonly found in the 20-40 year with excee
dingly high incidence in the females, (M:F=1:9.4)
The average duration of symptoms and signs before presentation was from 6 months to 2 years.
The most frequent clinical symptoms and signs were; mass, palpitation, tremor, anorexia and
indigestions, fatigue, perspiration and nervousness in order of frequency.
The incidence of the toxic goiter was approximately 21.4% of 271 thyroid cases, the sex ratio
was M:F 1:10.6.
The BMR and serum cholesterol level were relatively significant to serve as a guide for the diag
nosis and treatment.
In histopathological analysis of 67 cases, adenomatous goiter was 22 cases, benign adenoma 18,
diffuse hyperplasia 10, thyroid carcinoma 9, thyroid cyst 3, subacute thyroiditis 3, Hashimoto¢¥s
disease 2, respectively.
The operative technique use in most cases was subtotal thyoidectomy and total uniateral lobectomy.
The postoperative complications of the thyroid diseases were hypoparathyroidism 1 case, postop
rative hematoma 1, wound infection 1 and transient hoarseness 3. No fatal cases have occurred.
We reviewed the thyroid tumor and goister in the literatures.
